At 2:20 AM on April 14, 1912, the HMS Titanic struck an iceberg about 400 miles off the coast of Newfoundland. Less than three hours later, the ship that “God himself could not sink” was plunging to the bottom of the ocean. Of the 2240 people on board, only 740 would survive.
Eighty five years later, in 1997, the most expensive movie ever made told the story of one of history's greatest maritime disasters, and earned more money at the box than any other film in the world.
James Cameron’s TITANIC, starring Kate Winslet and Leo DiCaprio, was, and is, a global phenomenon. The film that made “I’m the king of the world,” the thing to exclaim at a party is an epic love story with ground-breaking special effects, a Greek tragedy and cautionary tale, a classic Hollywood saga with The History Channel mixed in. To get the shots of the actual sunken Titanic, which are part of the film, custom designed cameras and gear were developed to shoot under 1.2 million pounds of pressure at 2.5 miles beneath the sea.
On April 16th 2023, almost 111 years to the day, The Whaling Museum, with the New Bedford Food Tour and the New Bedford Film Society, present “A Titanic Event,” – a film and food experience.
