6 Things To Do In September In and Around New Bedford

September is a fabulous month on the South Coast. Don’t miss these fun activities and events:

1. Downton Abby Experiential Event- September 11

Spend a Sunday afternoon in the 1920s. New Bedford Food Tours, Cinema New Bedford, and The Rotch Jones Duff House are partnering to bring you an exciting film and food event.

Your day starts in the Rotch Jones Duff’s historic garden, with an English-style tea service, including tea and desserts from As It Crumbles*. Explore the RJD Mansion and learn more about both the “upstairs” and “downstairs” residents during the early 20th Century. Watch the first DOWNTON ABBEY film from the beloved series under the big tent at 2PM.

Post-Edwardian period dress is highly encouraged! Purchase tickets at the Zeiterion Box office for the film alone, or for the immersive Yorkshire Experience. This event is expected to sell out, so get your tickets now!

2. Summer Sound Series- Each Friday

There is still time to catch the last 2 free outdoor concerts in Downtown New Bedford. The Mayor’s Summer Sound Series has been hosting fun dance-filled block parties all summer. The streets are cleared of cars, and you can grab a drink or food from our partner restaurants while you dance the night away. Each show is from 6-8pm. Here is the September Line up:

PURCHASE STREET (between Union and William streets): Grab a drink and food from The Pour Farm

  • September 2: Hip Shot Band (upbeat dance, multi-genre, high-energy event band)

UNION STREET (between N. Water St. and Route 18): Grab a drink and food from Play Arcade or Rose Alley Ale House

  • September 9: The Rosie Show (singer / songwriter rock)

  • September 16:  Johnny Hoy & The Bluefish (bluesy dance music)

3. Cat Video Fest 2022- September 18

Cat Video Fest is a collection of the best cat videos from around the world, screened together for a joyous communal experience.

What began as offbeat programming for the internationally renowned Walker Arts Center soon became so popular that the event had to move from the museum to the St. Paul Saints stadium!

This remarkable reel of the latest and best videos culled from countless hours of unique submissions and sourced animations, music videos, and classic Internet powerhouses.

You can even send in your own cat video for a chance to see your furry friend on the big screen. Submit short, under-1-minute videos of your special feline friend for prizes and inclusion in our pre-show program by posting on social media with the hashtag #CatsofNewBedford or #ZeiterionPets.

4. Dartmouth Grange Fair- September 9 & 10

Don’t miss this annual family-friendly fair, first celebrated in 1897, with everything from music, contests for the best produce, a magic show, a nightly pie-eating contest, and more.  You can’t beat the value, with free admission and entertainment.  In addition to produce, canned goods, flowers, honey, and eggs, there are a few special categories of competition.  A tip for potential competitors in the special pollinator house/bug hotel contest category: submissions must be unoccupied!  The Dartmouth Grange Fair is September 9th and 10th.

5. Hit the beach and skip the crowds- All Month

There is something really spectacular about going to the beach in September. The crowds are gone, the ocean is warm, and the water has hit perfect swimming temperature. As a bonus for those without a sticker or just looking for variety, most of the town beaches are open to anyone after Labor Day. We recommend checking the individual beach’s policy prior to going.
